Severe throat pain, mouth ulcers (mucositis) and dry mouth after 15 sessions of IMRT radiation. What remedies are safe?
Undergoing 33 fractions of IMRT with weekly Cisplatin for base of tongue squamous cancer. Completed 15 fractions. Now having extreme burning sensation, cannot swallow solids, severe mouth dryness (xerostomia), and white patches on gums. Drinking water even stings. How can we soothe this without interrupting radiation?

Proven Clinical Management Protocol:
1. The Salt & Soda Miracle Mouthwash: Mix 1/2 teaspoon non-iodized salt + 1/2 teaspoon baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in 500ml warm water. Rinse and spit gently every 2 to 3 hours. Never use commercial alcohol-based mouthwashes.
2. Local Anesthetic Cocktail: 10 minutes prior to meals, rinse with Mucaine gel or 2% Viscous Lidocaine to numb the oral mucosa.
3. Rule out Oral Thrush: The white patches you described may be secondary Candida albicans infection. Ask your radiation team for oral Clotrimazole mouth paint or Fluconazole suspension.
4. Nutrition: Shift to lukewarm high-calorie blended soups, dalia, ice-cream, sattu, and whey protein shakes. If oral intake drops below 800 kcal/day, temporary Ryle's tube feeding should be placed promptly to prevent rapid weight drop.
